A common misconception is that these cups are designed to allow the Glock to sink. Contrary to what you've probably seen before on YouTube, this is very dangerous and even if you don't get hurt, you've damaged your weapon. Glock does not recommend shooting the Glock or any pistol underwater without proper training.
The actual purpose of these cups is to allow a slightly faster exit from the pin channel when exiting water during normal use and when operating on dry land, as well as to allow proper movement of the firing pin if present. Even after emptying the pistol, some water remains in this area. Glock does this by creating a cup with some plastic removed, reducing the sealing effect of a standard cup when covered with water.
The benefits of these optional parts are that if you find yourself operating in a marine environment, they can actually improve the reliability of your weapon by allowing more reliable primer strikes and thus bullet ignition. On the downside, there isn't much documentation on how long these cups will last compared to standard cups, but it can be estimated that there is 50% less plastic in the cup in contact with the firing pin channel. In my case, I like to run standard spring cups on my personal carry Glock. I currently don't see a need for these cups for anything other than extreme use, and we all know that standard cups fire well in heavy rain (been there and done that). Unless the gun is actually submerged, and then removed from the water and unloaded and used, I see no real reason to sacrifice the proven durability of standard cups and the longevity of the system in which they are installed.
